What should be in a first aid kit?

As silly as it may sound, a first aid kit can save a life so it is important to have one handy all the time.

What should you stock in your first aid kit?

We have listed a few items that is necessary in a first aid kit. The Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, states that first aid kits should contain at least 18 crucial items.

  • Plasters, in a variety of different sizes and shapes
  • Small, medium and large sterile gauze dressings
  • At least two sterile eye dressings
  • Triangular bandages
  • Crêpe rolled bandages
  • Safety pins
  • Disposable sterile gloves
  • Tweezers
  • Scissors
  • Alcohol-free cleansing wipes
  • Sticky tape
  • Thermometer
  • Skin rash cream
  • Cream or spray to relieve insect bites and stings
  • Antiseptic cream
  • Painkillers such as Paracetamol (and infant Paracetamol for children)
  • Cough medicine
  • Antihistamine tablets
  • Distilled water, for cleaning wounds and as an eye bath
  • First-aid manual
  • Splint
  • Plastic non-latex gloves (at least 2 pairs)
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Mouthpiece for administering CPR
  • A list of emergency phone numbers
