Exempted Quantities

Safety Signs & Equipment Suppliers

The Dangerous Goods Regulations apply to all vehicles, regardless of size, when transporting dangerous goods that exceed certain “Exempted Quantities.” These quantities can range from zero to 1,000 kg or litres, depending on the substance, its packing group (or danger level), and any additional risks involved.

For example, consider chlorine: A wholesaler delivering up to 12 containers of HTH granular chlorine (4 kg each) in a 10-ton truck, totalling 48 kg would not need to comply with these regulations since it is below the 50 kg exempt limit. However, if a retailer picks up just one additional container, bringing their total to 52 kg, they would be required to meet compliance standards.

These rules apply universally; whether you are driving within South Africa or just passing through in a foreign vehicle, compliance with these safety regulations is necessary. For very small quantities, “Exempted Quantities” allow for the transportation of hazardous goods with fewer requirements, often exempting them from standard labelling, UN packaging, and other regulations.

In short, understanding these quantities helps you remain compliant, safe, and within the bounds of the law!
