We have listed a few items that are necessary for a first aid kit. The Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, states that first aid kits should contain at least 18 crucial items.

- Small, medium and large sterile gauze dressings
- At least two sterile eye dressings
- Triangular bandages
- Crêpe rolled bandages
- Safety pins
- Disposable sterile gloves
- Tweezers
- Scissors
- Alcohol-free cleansing wipes
- Sticky tape
- Thermometer
- Skin rash cream
- Cream or spray to relieve insect bites and stings
- Antiseptic cream
- Painkillers such as Paracetamol (and infant Paracetamol for children)
- Cough medicine
- Antihistamine tablets
- Distilled water, for cleaning wounds and as an eye bath
- First-aid manual
- Splint
- Plastic non-latex gloves (at least 2 pairs)
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Mouthpiece for administering CPR
- A list of emergency phone numbers
